The death of Black actress and actress of color Lena Dunham, who became famous after starring in HBO’s Girls, was not commemorated.
“I don’t think it’s right,” Dunham said of the death.
“It’s just not something I’m proud of.
I don’t want to say that Lena was an inspiration to me, but she was an icon to me.
And I would never want to put her down.”
Dunham and Smalls shared an Instagram photo on August 13 with the caption, “My friend @lena_unnie, who’s died just this week, is the most beautiful woman I know.
I’ll always be grateful for everything you did for me.
You made me who I am today.”
Duncan is not the only one to celebrate her death.
On October 9, actor and activist Lauryn Hill died at age 55, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Hill’s death was celebrated by the Black Lives Matter movement.
Hill, who played a character named “Nancy” in the HBO series Girls, died after being found unresponsive in a hotel room in Los Angeles.
Hill’s body was discovered a day after she died.
“Nancy was an amazing person,” Hill’s mother told the Associated Press.
“She was a huge advocate for people of color in Hollywood and for women in general.
She was a great person.
She would have wanted to live long, and she was just a great girl.”
The Black Lives Movement was formed in the wake of the 2015 death of Laquan McDonald, a black teenager in Chicago, who shot and killed a police officer before being fatally shot by a police dog.
A memorial for McDonald is planned for October 11 at the University of Illinois at Chicago, which is located just steps away from the White House.
Hill was the second black actress to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2017, after Latoya Jenkins was nominated for the award.
Hill had been working on a new documentary called The Black Lives Matters Movement.
“When I saw that the Black women in Hollywood, the Black men in Hollywood were all saying, ‘We are all just human beings, and we can all go on, and you’re just one of the black women, you’re one of us,’ I just thought, ‘That’s what’s really going on,'” Hill told the Los Angeles Times.
